For example, a dyeing facility may need to provide electricity consumption per kilogram of fabric, along with fuel, water and chemical data.
- Accessing datasets
Commercial background databases are generally licensed. Ecoinvent is one of the widely used databases for LCA. Dataset costs may be included in the software or platform fee or charged separately.
- Checking the results
The model, data, units, assumptions, allocation methods and emission factors need to be reviewed before the result is used.
- Independent review

What affects LCA pricing?
- System boundary
A cradle-to-gate assessment covers the product until it leaves manufacturing while a cradle-to-grave assessment also includes distribution, consumer use and end of life.
For apparel, the use phase is significant as it can contribute majorly to the overall footprint. A cradle-to-grave study therefore requires more data and modelling than a cradle-to-gate study of the same product.
- Primary and secondary data
Secondary data comes from background databases and represents industry averages. It takes less time to collect and is generally less expensive. Primary data comes from the actual suppliers involved in manufacturing the product. This includes electricity, fuel, water and chemical consumption at manufacturing facilities.
Collecting primary data involves supplier outreach, follow-up and data validation. The work increases when several suppliers or manufacturing tiers are involved.
When comparing LCA quotes, ask what percentage of the assessment will use primary supplier data.
- Number of impact categories
A full Product Environmental Footprint assessment covers 16 impact categories, including water scarcity, eutrophication and land use.
An LCA study covering all 16 PEF impact categories requires more data and calculations than a carbon-only assessment.
- Dataset licences
Background database licences may be separate from the software fee. Therefore, you should ask which datasets are included and whether the quoted price covers the required licences and number of users.
- Updates
Product LCAs need to be updated as products, suppliers, materials and emission factors change. Similarly, introducing a new collection may need new product assessments. Existing assessments may also need to be updated when relevant inputs change.

Why does LCA cost more for fashion and lifestyle products?
Fashion products involve large catalogues and complex supply chains.
- Large SKU counts. A mid-sized fashion brand can have thousands of active products across several collections each year.
- Blended materials. A 62/33/5 cotton-polyester-elastane fabric needs the three fibres to be modelled according to their share of the material. Trims, threads, labels, interlinings and packaging may also need to be included.
- Wet processing. Dyeing and finishing can account for a significant share of a garment’s footprint. These processes often take place at Tier 2 mills where brands may not have a direct commercial relationship.
- Multiple production stages. Fibre, yarn, fabric, dyeing, finishing and garment production can involve different suppliers in different countries.

Difference between LCA and LCC
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) measures environmental impacts associated with a product across its life cycle. Depending on the scope, this can include climate change, water, land, toxicity and other impact categories.
Life Cycle Costing (LCC) measures the financial cost associated with a product across its life cycle.
When does an LCA need third-party verification?
Third-party review or verification may be required when:
- An LCA supports a public comparative claim
- The results are published through an EPD programme
- A customer requires independent assurance
- A regulatory submission requires assured data
Internal product analysis, supplier comparisons and reduction planning generally do not require third-party verification. Critical review and EPD programme fees are separate from the cost of preparing the LCA.
How to estimate your LCA budget
Start with the following five numbers.
1. Products: Count your active SKUs, then identify the distinct bill of materials and construction families that need to be modelled.
2. Suppliers: Count the Tier 1 manufacturers and Tier 2 mills and dyehouses from which you need primary data.
